The signs and symptoms of mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a disease that is caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos was used in various industries for quite a while across the country and the state of Louisiana was no exception. Asbestos was used in construction, shipbuilding and many other industries. It is still being removed from older homes and businesses throughout the state. Here are the signs and symptoms of mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma occurs in different areas of the body, which leads to different signs and symptoms of the disease. The two types of mesothelioma are known as peritoneal and pleural.

Peritoneal mesothelioma is found in the tissue within the abdomen. This type of mesothelioma can cause any of the following:

  • Swelling within the abdomen
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Lumps in the abdomen consisting of tissue

Pleural mesothelioma is found in the tissue that surrounds the lungs. This type of mesothelioma can cause any of the following symptoms:

  • Painful coughing
  • Chest pain underneath the rib cage
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Lumps under the skin near your chest consisting of tissue
  • Shortness of breath

There are other types of mesothelioma, but they are incredibly rare. These other types include mesothelioma of tunica vaginalis and pericardial mesothelioma. The first type mentioned here affects the area of the testicles and can cause a mass or swelling on a testicle. The second form of the disease affects the tissue that is found around the heart. It can cause shortness of breath and pain in the chest.
