A new report released in September of 2017 says that all types of asbestos have the ability to be deadly. The study was performed by researchers from Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital. The results of the study confirm what scientists have believed for years, and that is there is no safe form of asbestos and that all forms can eventually lead to malignant mesothelioma.
The types of asbestos still around today include the following:
- "White" asbestos (found in ceiling tiles, roof tiles, walls and floors)
The study focused on 62 patients, 51 men and 11 women, who have been diagnosed with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. Of those 62 patients, more than one-quarter of them had cancer caused by the "white" asbestos. The study also discovered that of the patients with mesothelioma who had not worked with asbestos, half of them developed cancer caused by "white" asbestos.
The patients in the study were exposed to asbestos in their life between an average of eight years and 17.9 years. The study shows that even the shortest exposure to asbestos can eventually lead to the development of mesothelioma and other cancers.
According to the researchers, the time it took from first exposure to receiving a mesothelioma diagnosis for a patient was no less than 45 years in this study. The longest time from first exposure to diagnosis of the disease was 57 years.
If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma in New Orleans, consult with an experienced attorney who can answer all of your questions regarding the disease.
