Cancer screenings are coming to the Delta Region

Lung cancer is a serious public health threat in Louisiana, the state with the highest rate of the disease in the country. One of the related problems is mesothelioma, a type of cancer that affects the lining of the lungs or other thoracic organs. This particular cancer has been associated with long-term exposure to asbestos in industrial or construction settings.

A new grant is allowing a cancer prevention and treatment center based in Baton Rouge to offer cancer screenings in Louisiana's Delta Region. These procedures can help identify lung cancer before symptoms appear, which can improve the prognosis for patients with this problem.

The center will be able to invite residents of 12 parishes in the Bayou State to cancer education sessions, as well as prevention tips and screenings that could identify cancerous growths. The grant comes from the foundation of a local health network, which also stands to gain from earlier detection of lung cancer.

The Louisiana Tumor Registry reported more than 24,000 cases of invasive cancers between 2011 and 2015. Lung cancer was the most commonly reported type of cancer in the state, followed by prostate and breast cancers. Most of these types of cancers can be detected with early screenings.

People who believe their lung cancer may have been caused or affected by pollution or other industrial side effects may have a case in civil court for financial damages to help with medical treatment and recovery. An attorney may be able to help victims of lung cancer and their families to work out the possibilities involving the court system.
