Survival rates for malignant pleural mesothelioma

On Behalf of | Jul 23, 2018 | mesothelioma

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) typically begins in the chest’s inner lining. While is it certainly possible to be diagnosed with mesothelioma in other locations, this is most common form of this cancer.

If you do have MPM, you may be interested in looking at the survival rates. Please note that every individual case is different. Many factors come into play, such as age, overall health and the specific arrangement of the cancer cells.

These rates just reflect averages found in studies to give you an idea of how the disease tends to progress.

That said, here are the two-year and five-year survival rates:

  • Stage IA cancer. Two-year survival rate: 46 percent. Five-year survival rate: 16 percent.
  • Stage IB cancer. Two-year survival rate: 41 percent. Five-year survival rate: 13 percent.
  • Stage II cancer: Two-year survival rate: 38 percent. Five-year survival rate: 10 percent.
  • Stage IIIA cancer: Two-year survival rate: 30 percent. Five-year survival rate: 8 percent.
  • Stage IIIB cancer: Two-year survival rate: 26 percent. Five-year survival rate: 5 percent.
  • Stage IV cancer: Two-year survival rate: 17 percent. Five-year survival rate: under 1 percent.

Once again, every single case is different. Even the lower percentages still mean that people survive to those dates. Age plays a very big role, as many people who develop mesothelioma are already elderly since it takes so long to progress.

If you do have cancer, it is very important to seriously consider the potential outcome and the impact to your family. Make sure you understand all of the legal options that you have, which may include the right to seek significant compensation.
