New drug combo may be promising for some mesothelioma sufferers

On Behalf of | Apr 24, 2020 | mesothelioma

Mesothelioma destroys families. The sad reality is that this disease often isn’t detected until its later stages, which means that sufferers are often left with limited treatment options, and their survival rates may be dramatically decreased. This can leave victims and their families fearful of the future and struggling to find a way forward.

The good news is that medical research into this disease continues, sometimes with promising results. For example, researchers recently tested a combination of two drugs, nivolumab and ipilimumab, on untreated individuals who are suffering from malignant pleural mesothelioma. When compared to chemotherapy, this treatment increased overall survival rates, which is generally quite low for those with this disease. The disease control rate reached 68%.

It is worth noting that more than 90% of those who received the treatment suffered some sort of adverse reaction. These reactions weren’t always serious, though, as they included skin irritation and fatigue. Also, there are usually some risks associated with medical treatments, but patients merely have to weigh those risks in light of the potential benefits.

New treatment options for mesothelioma are constantly being developed. Although they can take a long time to be tested and make their way to the market, they do offer hope. Of course, for those who are suffering from mesothelioma, there are immediate needs that have to be met. Medical treatment has to be paid for, wages must be recouped, and pain and suffering needs to be addressed. Dealing with these damages can be stressful, but those who find themselves in this situation may be entitled to compensation for their losses. Those who would like to learn more can reach out to an attorney of their choosing.
