What to do if you’re exposed to asbestos

On Behalf of | Oct 26, 2020 | asbestos

Many people are exposed to asbestos without their knowledge. Others, however, learn about exposure shortly after it happens. If you find yourself in this position, it’s critical that you take every step you can to protect your health.

The first thing you should do is determine where the exposure occurred and why this was the case. For example, if you work in the construction industry, you may learn of exposure that occurred while tearing down or rebuilding an old structure.

With asbestos linked to a variety of potentially fatal diseases, including lung cancer and mesothelioma, it’s critical that you take immediate action. Here’s what you should do:

  • Learn more: For instance, if your exposure occurred on the job, talk to your employer about your concerns. They can investigate to better understand the location of the asbestos, cause of exposure and what to do next.
  • Consult with an experienced doctor: Even if you feel okay, don’t assume that’s the case. It can take many years for asbestos exposure to cause trouble. On the plus side, short-term exposure doesn’t always have a negative impact on your health.
  • Watch for symptoms: Maybe you have a cough that won’t go away. Or maybe you’re struggling with chest pain and shortness of breath. If your symptoms linger, talk to your doctor about running diagnostic tests to learn more. These include but are not limited to a CT scan, X-ray and biopsy.
  • Talk about your treatment options: If you’re diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease, such as lung cancer, consult with a specialist to better understand your treatment options. From surgery to chemotherapy to oxygen therapy, there are steps you can take to control the disease.

Along with the above, don’t hesitate to consult with an attorney. Doing so immediately after diagnosis will help clear your mind, while also deciding if you’re in position to take legal action.

It’s difficult to learn that your health was compromised by asbestos exposure, but don’t give up. There are steps you can take to protect both your health and legal rights. Continue to push forward while you take measures to hold the negligent party responsible.
